December 2020 feature
Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all.
- Vincent Van Gogh
Post cv-19 Shanghai, these latest images explore aspects of our relationship with each other as life emerges hesitantly back onto the street.
I am interested in the tension of human urban interaction, the nature of identity between strangers and this new invisible ghost like danger on the huge communal surface of the street.
I usually work at night, where I can be free from constraints and rules. Night is a territory that allows me to get lost, to explore and discover new directions. I try to not work with a predefined notion of what photography should be, but allow it to be as loose and intuitive as possible.
I believe in romance as a harmony that exists due to the complexity of our Universe transitioning from order to disorder. A force that travels through time since our earliest moment of creation. Photography is a tool that somehow brings me closer to that energy, where truths can be elevated and revealed.
DSTR8 studied Fine Art at Birmingham England’s Margaret Street Art School. He lives and works throughout Asia and is currently based in Shanghai.
When DSTR8 was studying art, photography was always a tool that fed his installation and painting, a way of thinking, but never more than something that added to his sketch books. Later while on the road travelling and working through many different countries, through the simple and convenient nature of the camera, photography became more. This way of seeing and asking questions through photography is, for now, really the only way he chooses to work.
